FRIDAY FICTIONEERS - THE GLORY DAYS by Linda Palund - My 100 words

The Glory Days

Vines cover the rotting boards and the roof has caved in, but the old barn still stands, a crumbling memorial to the time when we were girls.
Girls! With the solidarity of youth, we scrambled up the ladder, watching the surprised faces of the eager boys as we drew it up behind us.
Those girls are gone now, swallowed up by the very earth we once flew across, our young hearts pounding.
The barn won’t stand much longer and soon I too will melt into the landscape.  Then no one will be left to remember the glory of our youth.

    1. You are so right. I guess we had better keep writing them down...

  2. I read this twice, and enjoyed it immensely. My favorite line: " swallowed up by the very earth we once flew across..." it says so much!

  3. I like them pulling up the ladder behind them. So many stories are lost when people die. I keep trying to get my parents to write some of theirs down.

    Have a wonderful weekend,

    1. Thank you, Janet. You make me feel old - but that is what I am now, But what rich lives we can have. You too! Don't miss out and keep writing.

  4. Linda - true and poignant, I feel that way exactly. I wrote my blog so that some of the small events in my life would not erode like the names on the soft stone cemetery markers that season by season wash away.

    1. I will take a look at your blog now. Yes, it is good to keep writing these things, whether they are real memories or they are bursts of imagination. Let no one forget - or we can try to keep our imaginations and our passions alive.

    1. Thanks so much. It is good to be back, and hard also. A lot of water has been flowing under my bridge this year and I think it is going to change my writing. But oh Shalom...shalom.

  7. Aah... the glory of our youth fades
but the ability to give Glory today does not.

New ladders to place against the House each day.

  8. Hi Linda,
Great descriptions of the heady days of youth. And I really liked the extended metaphor of the aging barn and the aging girls. Ron

    1. Thanks for that. This was a real seen from my glory days. Then we had a net filled with twigs and leaves and feathers and dropped that all over them. I don't know what the boys were expecting, but I know they weren't as innocent as I was!

  13. Ah memories. Unfortunately they fade just as our health and the strong structure of our homes and barns.
