FRIDAY FICTIONEERS - 27 April 2012 - THE TRAP - My 100 Words - Linda Palund

THE TRAP

“Don’t think you’re gonna hold her with that barbed wire, do you?”
Trapper John grinned, “Nah. The wire’s just for show.  I got an electric fence ‘round the landing pad. I know what I’m doing.”
“Sure like to know how you trapped her.”
“No secret to catching a ‘corn.  Just Dragon Tears and a good binding spell.”
The helicopter landed before daylight, but by then the dragon tears had dried.  The unicorn skewered Trapper John and tossed him into the barbed wire.  The buyers caught just a glimpse of silver as she cleared the fence and galloped into the dawn.

  2. Yes, a little departure for me - but not too far. I like to think I can keep my ink moving in any direction, but I am always me.
I shall take a look at you now!

    1. Man, this is not my day when it comes to responding to people's stories. On some pages (this one, for example) I don't even get a window to leave a comment, which is why I'm trying to "reply" to something you said earlier. It probably won't post though. I posted four different messages to Charley, and when I sent him an email, he found three of them in his spam filter. Anyway, I LOVE 'corn stories ... especially when arrogant arseholes get their just rewards. You packed a lot of action and emotion into that short story. Well done. Have you seen mine? http://scottcheck.blogspot.com

  3. Unicorns 1, Trappers 0. Love it! The best species won. A truly original take on the prompt. Nice one.

  4. neat juxtaposition between fantasy and modern reality. I really liked the dialog (the dropping of first syllables, especially)

  5. How very Cabin in the Woods. I love it. If you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend it if you like horror with a neat twist. Anyway, love the story. I especially love the modern twist. Cheers!

  7. This is the second tale of violent unicorns that I've seen lately - how very strange! This one kinda reminded me of Jurassic Park in an odd way.

  8. This is puzzling ... no idea what is going on. I'm not much of a fantasy fan. I love the idea of unicorns, but not violent ones. Regardless, that won't stop me from reading your stories. And you have plenty of fantasy fans. Here's mine:

  9. I love how the "I know what I'm doing" rings in my ear as my eyes come across 'skewered'. Nicely done.

  10. A little bit to cocky for his own good. That backfired on him for sure. Neat tale!

  11. Hurray! I'm firmly on the side of the 'corn in this one. Arrogant Trapper John got his comeuppance!

  14. LOL, I love that the unicorn got away. Such a mix of present day reality (the helicopter) and mythical beasts. It worked, and I hope I'm going to be able to pull off my mix of history and fiction as well.

  15. I tried to feel bad for trapper John, tried to cry, but apparently all my dragon tears were already dry.
Also, I'm glad you included a rare sighting of the Mythical "Helicopter" creature.
    A wonderful read. Thank you.

  16. Nothing I hate worse than amateurs when it comes to unicorn capture. Delightful little story indeed. :D

  17. How about NEVER have I heard of a unicorn skewering a person. I'm glad the the unicorn escaped and it's kind of refreshing that you brought these creatures to the same level of all the other mythical creatures. The fact is it is still a beast and it has to survive. Great yarn and that you blended technology into the story seamlessly makes it all the better. 18. Time for a shameless Star Wars quote: 'Your over-confidence is your weakness...'
I loved this, the characterisation via well written dialogue, the fist-pumping victory of the unicorn, the blending of the fantastical with the mudane. Perfect. Very much my cup of tea. :-)
