FRIDAY FICTIONEERS - MAN AGAINST MACHINE - MY 100 WORDS BY LINDA PALUND

MAN AGAINST MACHINE
The bike was there every day, fastened to the tree where Jenny worked.  But when Jenny failed to show that day or the following, and the bike remained, they gave up calling her home and called me instead.
I found the note taped under the seat.
‘Dear Mom and Dad, I have gone to Mars with George.
Intermarriage with Robots is legal there.
We no longer have to live in sin.
Please believe this is the happiest day of my life.
            Jenny’
The Man Against Machine Act is pretty clear. The bike can stay, but the Robot has to go.

  1. Very good! Complete story in 100 words and also with a nice twist in the tale. :)

    1. Thanks so much. I wasn't sure that the story worked or it was all in my head.

  2. Hi Linda,
Out of this world take on the photo! I wonder what their children will be like, a mix of electronic and human components? More importantly, will this bigotry against robots finally be ended and we can all live and love together in peace? Ron

    1. Yes, this must stop. I am so tired of hiding in the closet with my vacuum cleaner....

  3. Robot gets earth girl ran in the Mars headlines I am sure. We can expect either an invasion to grab all the women or an attack to obliterate them based on her experience.

    1. From experience, I would say that Mars will not react well to an Earth Government Agent taking action on their red planet sands....

  4. Boldly going where no FF story has gone this week. Creative and well-written.

  6. Dear Lindaura,

What a unique and clever take on the prompt. But I have to admit what really tickled me is your comment to Ron about hiding in the closet with your vacuum. I might love a machine but I'm sure it wouldn't be my Kirby. LOL.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

  7. OH yeah! It is really the Kirby that I love. Those early models are so robotic!

  8. Good story! Reminds me of Bicentennial Man. My favourite Star Trek character is Data of Star Trek Enterprise. Don't know what that says about me. The day will come however, when man and computer will be fused. Then a new species will arise. I often feel fused with my computer anyway. Ann

  9. Thanks for that. I like that you feel fused to your computer anyway. We don't realise how true that is...more so everyday.

  10. I always thought the Bionic Woman was kind of cute. Perhaps a robotic woman wouldn't be so emotional.

  11. Oh Russell! I'm shocked! How about that poor convict stuck on the Asteroid in the 7th episode of Twilight Zone's first season (the best season ever) named Cory. He was totally in love with his Robot wife Alicia, Played by Jean Marsh (later of Rose in Upstairs Downstairs Fame). He refused to leave the Asteroid without her and the guard had to shoot her in the face to stop Cory from taking her. Her revealed Robot gears kept repeating "Cory...Cory...Cory..." And totally freaked me out as a child, which is why I am the way I am now, in love with wholesome R7 Series Robots and Kirby Vacuum Cleaners...

  13. Linda, I like that Twilight Zone episode too and Jean Marsh was gorgeous back in the day. "All you're leaving behind is loneliness," but hell, get me one of those, I wouldn't want to leave her behind either! We need to repeal that "Man Against Machine Act," I think.

    1. You know I met Jean Marsh in England when she was appearing in a play in Bath and stayed at my apartment. That is actually how I found about that Twilight Zone - as it was her first introduction to Hollywood, but it had always been one of the most memorable episodes, although I still remember the one with "Myra" in the back seat of some guys car and I've had a hard time looking in my rear view mirror ever since...
I think, despite the terror it inspired in me, Twilight Zone saved my young life. Thank you, Rod!
