FRIDAY FICTIONEERS - 25 May 2012 - REPORT FROM AN EMPTY PLANET - Linda Palund's 100 Words

REPORT FROM AN EMPTY PLANET

On the 27th day, we found the lone structure, it’s perfect sheet of molten sand un-smashed. We’d encountered nothing like it anywhere on the planet.
Almost nothing remained of the former inhabitants. No sentient creatures survived whatever happened here.
Only the flora thrived, pollen borne on the wind.
Something was written in an alien script behind the molten sand, but we could not translate it. We would leave that to the curators.
“If only we knew its use.” Green Goddess sighed.
“Perhaps this was a place of worship.” I suggested.  We filed our report and flew back to the mothership.

  1. Hey, like minds... moths as alien spaceships, I did it too, but not like yours. Very good, Ms Glamoura, nice writing! My two storiesm Invasion and Delusion, are at http://repuestodelatabla.wordpress.com/

  2. Dear Linda,

It was a place of worship so they were right. The god of fat rose up and struck them all down.

A very nice take on the photo.

    Aloha,

    Doug

    1. Thank you Ms Allura, with all that is going on here, it is amazing what one can zip out in 100 words.

  6. My guess is that this is the lone structure simply because it has a half-life of 500 years, infused into the "molten sand" by the preservatives and anti-bacteriatives served inside. For some reason, and old Twilight Zone episode is bouncing around inside my head: "To Serve Man".

Mine once again skirts on the overly ambiguous. It's at http://scottcheck.blogspot.com/2012/05/font-face-font-family-cambria-p.html

    1. God, that has to be one of the best episodes ever. They really fooled me the first time I saw it. Such a cunning pun, but I was only 12 years old, so I was completely taken in. I was the greatest 12 year old fan that Twilight Zone ever had.
      Thanks for stopping by.

  7. Wonderful, and yes to many I imagine it is a place of worship! I also went with the moths POV, sort of.

  9. Yes, it is a place of worship. Kneel before the golden arches. Sacrifice a Big Mac to the gods of fast food. I loved the alient POV. Great story. Thanks for reading and commenting on mine. Ron

  10. Dear Linda,
This reminds me of the History Channel documentaries on "Life after Man." I loved the sheet of molten sand. Maybe it was one too many Grumpy Meals that killed us off.

Thanks for reading & commenting on mine.

  11. Hey, thanks for remarking on my window description. I try to get the alien mind set properly, even though I am writing in our own language.
    Yours as ever,
    Lindaura

  12. Place of worship! You got that right. I, of course, am agnostic, at least so far as the big Mac is concerned.

  13. Right you are! But this is a private joke (with myself) because we live next to Stonehenge, and the historians and archeologists go round and round about what its purpose was - and I know they have no idea. I think it was part of a condo. but it could just as well have been a shopping mall...
    Bless those golden arches...

  14. Fantastic take, Linda. I like the molten sand and I absolutely was with you on the Stonehenge reference.
How many Moth-er Ships have I seen today?!

  15. Wow, I totally missed out on the Moth-er ship. You take the biscuit!

  16. Hmmmmm... I like the way you put things from the perspective of Green Goddess and co.

This is the third post-apocalyptic story I've read today.
    Interesting.

    Here's my take:

  17. "perfect sheet of molten sand"! [giggle, snort] I like this twist. (I thought the McDonald's looked abandoned too.) And you used the reflected trees - nice!

  18. So it was the "Golden Arches" that gave them the impression it was a house of worship. Is it possible the "Arches" would have actually survived...like Stonehenge? Even after WWIII? Hint to MotherShip...Google "Golden Arches" and learn about McD's. lol. Here's mine:

  19. Oh, I love the other-worldly sci-fi take on this. Such a fanciful idea, I wish I'd thought to do it.

  20. OMG! A place of worship? I loved that line!!! Thanks, Linda.

  21. I agree with Russell, Life After Man indeed. Makes me wonder if archaeologists have the right take on Stone Henge or the pyramids. Clever writing. I really enjoyed.

  25. Great take on the prompt, and I am so jealous that you are that close to Stonehenge. We're in South Devon, so it's a bit of a trek for us. Still, the stone circle makes it into our novels instead. ;-)

Thanks for your comment on ours, we appreciate it.
