FRIDAY FICTIONEERS - REPORT FROM PLANET EARTH - MY 100 WORDS BY LINDA PALUND

Report From Planet Earth

             “0002 calling Base.”
“Proceed, 0002. Have you anything to report?”
“Neither flora nor fauna have survived.  No architectural works remain.”
“0003 reports a structure north of you.  They are sending an image through now.”
“Yes, I see it.  I cannot speculate to its purpose.  Give me 0003”
“This is 0003.  We have found an asymmetrical stone structure. A petrified specimen of Flora attached.”
“Can you determine the structure’s purpose?”
“A burial ground exists alongside.  We calculate the structure served as a prison or internment camp.”
We cosmic archaeologists have difficulty determining context in artefacts left behind on such desolate planets.

  1. Hi Linda,
Like that new photo. Premise for your next novel in this story. Archaeologists digging up what's left of global civilization and mis-interpreting it. I think much of it could be done by R7 robots. And yes, churches are prisons of the soul. Ron

    1. Thanks, Ron. Yes, you are right. Those R7s are doing the digging. I like how you summed up "Churches are prisons of the soul".

  3. Yes, it does have that look. I like what you did with the photo. I never noticed the man in the lower RH corner until now. Nice story, Linda.

  4. Clever twist in the next to last paragraph; yep, makes the point! Nicely done (but check spelling of "artifacts.")

    1. Artefacts, hmmmm. I am in Greece right now, but I think my spell checker is American. Usually, I use an English one, as I am usually in England. It does get a bit confusing...

    2. I was also going to point out what I perceived as a mispell until I looked it up. In any case, an interesting take, certainly one no one else thought of this week. Good job.

    3. Thanks, Rochelle, but I have to come back to Earth as we know it, not as I keep foreseeing it. Next week, I shall write some kind of real kitchen sink type story. There were so many good ones this week...

  5. Dear Lindaura,

Your archeologist guessed right the first time. Love this story. How is Greece treating you? happy to have a few visitors, are they?

    Aloha,

    Doug

  6. Thanks, Doug,
Yes, Athens is lovely. Would be tourists don't realise how civilised and gorgeous this city is. There are always trees on every street, lovingly watered by the nearby householders, and the buildings are just tall enough to afford shade always on one side or the other. There are lots of parks and of course, there is the Acropolis, almost always visible, along with other reminders of antiquity.
Whoops! I sound like an advert... But I do like it, and the food is fabulous, the Greeks are kind, and put on a happy face despite what the outside world is saying about them....
Charley, Carlos, is stuck in Bath with the bad weather and the poor crippled dog.
He is too busy working on his Listomania Bath website to join in on the Flash Fiction... I know he misses you though...
